According to a UN spokesman, Turkey's request to change its name to Turkiye has been accepted.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that the change took effect soon after the international organization received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu requesting the country's name change, according to reports.
According to reports, Cavusoglu said that the change in spelling was done as part of the country's plan to promote its worldwide status.
On Tuesday, the foreign minister announced that the letter has been officially handed over to the United Nations and other international organizations.
“We were able to lay a decent foundation for this with the help of our Directorate of Communications. We have made it possible for countries along with the United Nations and other international organizations to see the switch to ‘Turkeys’,” said the Anadolu Agency. Quoting Cavusoglu.
The initiative to use the country's foreign name, "Turkey", began in national and international forums, with a decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in December 2021.
